'Our squad is much stronger now' - U's boss Bonner on January window and Town testIpswich Town travel to Cambridge United tomorrow for a League One clash (3pm). Mark Heath takes a look at the U's... Story so far After finishing 14tn in League One last season, Mark Bonner's men came into the 2022/23 campaign being tipped as dark horses by some. Sadly for the U's faithful, that's just not happened. The U's currently sit second bottom of the League One table - one of four sides on 25 points - with a record of seven wins, four draws and 16 defeats. They've not won in the league since Boxing Day, a 2-1 home triumph over Shrewsbury Town. But the Shrews tamed them in the reverse fixture last month, belting them 5-1, while high-flying Sheffield Wednesday also put five past them in a 5-0 humbling earlier in January. All told, the U's have won just one of their last 11 league tussles. There are a couple of positives to hang their hats on going into this game though. Kyle Edwards was sent off when Town last played at the Abbey Stadium (Image: Steve Waller) They've held top sides Plymouth and Bolton to 0-0 draws at the Abbey this season and have, of course, actually beaten Town 1-0 there too.

Defenders Ryan Bennett (Swansea), Michael Morrison (Portsmouth) - who was born in Haverhill - and Steve Seddon (Oxford) were all recruited, along with midfielders George Thomas, from QPR, and Conor McGrandles from Charlton. And Bonner said they will make his team stronger as they gear up for the relegation fight. "I don't remember a window were we've signed players with such experience at this level, " he enthused.

That Papa John's Trophy tie was spoiled by an early red card for Kyle Edwards, but at least offers the U's a bit of confidence. In the league clash at Portman Road a couple of weeks before, Town cruised to a 3-0 win - with super sub Edwards grabbing a brace late on. Cambridge can still save themselves from the drop - they're only four points off Fleetwood in 17th - but they need to start stringing results together, something they've not done all season. Cambridge added defender Ryan Bennett from Swansea in January (Image: PA Images) January business The U's added five players in the transfer window, with Bonner pleased with what his side were able to do.
